New application evaluation process

While the process for students remains the same, they are now being moved to rank lists sooner, and offers of admission for second-choice programs are made sooner. As a result, many students may receive an offer of admission to their second-choice program prior to the end of the first semester.

Students who receive an offer of admission on their second-choice program must indicate on their myStudentSystem whether they wish to accept the offer or not. If they believe they will end up meeting the requirements for their first-choice program they can decline the offer of admission to their second choice while indicating they wish to “Stay on other program’s waitlist” for the first choice program to remain active. Neglecting to indicate a wish to stay on the other program’s waitlist will close evaluation of both programs. If they accept the offer of admission to their second choice, the evaluation of their first-choice program will be closed, and they will be removed from the program’s rank list.

Students who decline an offer of admission to their second-choice program can email admissions@macewan.ca to request an evaluation of the second-choice be reopened at any time prior to the program’s application deadline.

For example, a student applies to the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) as their first choice and the Bachelor of Science (BSc) as their second choice:

  • The student is determined to have an admission average of 85 per cent. They would be placed on a rank list for the BScN and the evaluation of their application to BSc would begin.
  • With an 85 percent average, the student would receive an offer of admission for the BSc and would be required to decide whether to accept or decline the offer within 45 days.
  • If the student anticipates they will be academically competitive for the BScN program, they could decline the offer to the BSc and remain on the rank list for the BScN.
  • If they decline the BSc offer, and then determine that they won’t be admitted to the BScN, they can request to have the BSc application reopened before the application deadline.
Reminders for students who have applied or will be applying

Students who have applied, or will be applying, to MacEwan should log in to the university’s student portal (myPortal.MacEwan.ca) to check on the status of their application and if there are any items on their to-do list. Outstanding items on a to-do list will delay an offer of admission.

Admission offers can also be delayed if the student hasn’t declared their current and next term high school course registration: the Grade 12 courses they have completed, classes they are currently in and the classes they will be taking next term. Students should include this information when they apply through ApplyAlberta, but, if they forget, they can complete MacEwan’s Confirmation of High School Registration form (also accessible through the student portal).

Applying to the correct term

All students currently enrolled in high school courses should apply to the Fall 2020 intake term. It’s not an uncommon occurrence for students to submit an application for the incorrect intake term, because intake terms on ApplyAlberta are listed chronologically. Students see the Spring 2020 intake as the first available option, and may miss selecting the Fall 2020 term.

Many MacEwan programs do not offer Spring intake, so one indication a student has selected the wrong intake term is that the program they are interested in does not appear in the list of available programs.

If a student applies to the incorrect intake term, they can get assistance by emailing admissions@macewan.ca using their myMacEwan email account.

Change to offer acceptance period

Beginning with applications for Winter 2021 intake and beyond, applicants will have 21 days to accept an offer of admission and pay their Admission Confirmation deposit. It is important to encourage applicants to check their myStudentSystem regularly throughout the admission cycle to ensure they’re aware of required actions and their timelines.
